HASTINGS960 SOMETHING HUGE IS COMING

2026 IS THE 960TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF HASTINGS AND THE ASTONISHING BAYEUX TAPESTRY WILL BE VISITING LONDON. TO MARK THIS SPECIAL YEAR WE ARE CHALLENGING OURSELVES, WITH YOUR HELP, TO PRODUCE AN AMBITIOUS
AND EPIC DISPLAY WARGAME IN 18MM. WE ARE CALLING IT HASTINGS960.

WHAT IS IT?

We are recreating the full battle, figure-for-figure, at a 1-to-1 scale in 18mm. That means fielding two massive armies — 8,400 Anglo-Danes facing off against 8,400 Normans — all deployed using the magnificent, affordable and dynamic PaperBoys.

This is more than a game; it is a visual spectacle and a powerful demonstration that Army-Level wargaming is accessible to everyone.
To realise this grand vision, we need the expertise, passion, and effort of the entire Wargaming community.

30 BASES OF PAPERBOYS PER SIDE. EACH BASE WILL ROUGHLY HOST 280-330 MINIATURES IN 18MM, (57-70 STRIPS CIRCA)

On one side the Elite Huscarls and the mighty Fyrd with their endless shieldwall, on the other side the French and Breton Cavalry, the fearsome Archers and Spearmen and ultimately the Norman Knights a sight to behold on the battlefield.

WRITE YOUR NAME IN HISTORY

The result of this effort will be brought to the The Other Partizan on 11 October 2026 for a Grand Show (3 days before the Anniversary). A Rolling Banner with a beautiful illustration by Peter with all the names of the participants will be placed next to the table.

By subscribing the form, you will be sent one or more units (depending on your level of commitment) that you will have to snip, glue on base and send back to the H960 Headquarter in Nottinghamshire.

HERE IS HOW THE EFFORT WORKS:

Join: Sign up via the form in the "Join the Ranks" section of the website to become a volunteer contributor. NAME, SURNAME, EMAIL ARE ALL REQUIRED FIELDS
Receive Your Contingent: AFTER YOU HAVE DECLARED HOW MANY BASES YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SUBMIT We will assign you a specific Paperboys Sheet Package — perhaps a BASE of Anglo-Danes or a BASE of Norman Archers.
Create: You will receive the Instructions and the sheet of PaperBoys
and dedicate your skills to gluing, folding, cutting and basing your assigned figures.
Deploy: Once your figures are complete and based according to our specifications, you send them back to the H960 Command Center. Your contribution will be proudly deployed on the final battlefield! Your Name will be credited to the Hastings960 WARBANNER THAT WILL BE BROUGHT AT WARGAMES EVENTS.

STATIC SAXONS

For the Anglo-Danes, the core of the defense rests with the legendary warriors. Roughly one-third of the army will be composed of the Elite Huscarls, the rest being the steadfast Immortal Fyrd—the men who crossed Britain (380 miles - 600 km) in a forced march and fought two battles in three weeks. Your command is simple: Hold your Shields overlapped and tight! Build your WALL and let none pass! Remain vigilant, and beware of the Norman "Feign Flights!"

CHARGING NORMANS

The Norman Army's composition will be highly varied, reflecting Duke William's reliance on combined arms. The front ranks are filled with Spearmen and a powerful mix of Archers/Crossbowmen. Poised in the second ranks is the Cavalry, deployed across three columns:
Bretons (Left), French (Right), and Norman Knights (Center). This layered structure is designed to relentlessly apply pressure and break the English Shield Wall..
