Looking out at this 5-meter table right here in the George Stephenson Hall, it is hard to believe that this entire journey started way back in July 2025.
A full year of preparation filled with countless twists and turns, highs, lows, and more late-afternoon phone calls with Peter than I can possibly count.
An undertaking of this type does not happen by accident. It takes a village—or in our case, a global alliance of driven minds. From, literally EVERYWHERE from the United States
to the Philippines, from Russia, to Japan, yesterday we stood around the longest shield wall ever brought to a tabletop.
We owe gratitude to the pillars who made this project a reality.
First, we must bow to the sheer genius of Peter Dennis. Without Peter, none of this would exist. Not just his breathtaking artwork that brings every single warrior to life, but his brilliant ingenuity—including engineering Senlac Hill itself with its fantastic aeroplane-wing cardboard structure. He gave us the canvas; we just filled it with war.
Again, I just want to put the stress on the fact that we have 28 international participants who stepped up to the cutting mat to make this project truly grand. Look across the globe!
From single stands to massive contributions, every snipped paper edge, every glued base, built this army piece by piece.
I want to thank them all.
Speaking of the cutting table though, I have to give a massive shout-out to my fellow cutter, Gerard Byram. Gerard went above and beyond with his extraordinary snipping capacity, answering every call to arms without hesitation.
Now a couple of words about the Rules of Engagement.
Enter James Morris and his cracking ruleset, Midgard Heroic Battles. When it came to bringing these armies to life on the table, we needed the right machinery.
Yesterday it proved to be the absolute right choice for this engagement. James didn't just provide the rules; his dedication, imagination, and tireless work tailoring the army lists and tweaking the system gave us a game worthy of 1066.
Moreover I want to deeply thank his personal Guard of Huscarls that guided us through the game: Paul Scrivens-Smith, Paul Welsh, Thomas Webster-Deakin, Nick Gilmore and Martyn Cartledge. Thank You all. You stepped in when we needed the most.
Above all, we must thank History itself.
History gave us the narrative, the drama, the tragedy, and the triumph. It gave us a story rich enough to read, revise, and—on this very table yesterday—challenge. None of this would have been possible without the weight and wonder of the past. We pay homage to every man that stood on battle ridge among the ranks of the Saxons and every Norman that charged uphill.
Finally, I want to express my own deepest thanks for the opportunity to organise something quite this mad.
It has been an incredible year of my life. The Award for - Best In Show - we won at the Other Partizan 2026 on the 11 of October isn't our: it is all yours and well deserved.
